What Buddhist Books can you recommend?

Before I ask I would like to say that I have done a YA! search and none on the questions or the answers to them answer my question here.
So please no *drink* !!!

As the title suggests I am looking for Books on Buddhism.
Specifically I am looking for books that can be read by a total beginner. A book that speaks in an easy to understand terminology so I can understand and then move on to more complex teachings.

The book doesn’t have to be in amazing detail of every aspect of Buddhism, but I would like it to explain the differences in the types of Buddhism like Zen, Pureland etc… and the heavens and Hells, hungry ghosts etc… all the main beliefs in a nutshell just to get me started.

If you know of no books like this then any good websites that explains the above would be much appreciated.

If you want to study Buddhism, a good place to start would be the works of its spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
